The Seagull

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a story of a seagull who, unlike his comrades, is not happy yelling "Mine! Mine! Mine!" for food. He loves to soar, and fly. He faces rejection and ridicule for his quest for greater heights. And of course, he inspires all of us to reach for our goals.

The story here is that Jonathan and Fletcher were not "special" in any way. They were seagulls like any others. The difference is that they chose to strive to better themselves. They were not content to merely eat and sleep. They wanted to become really good at what they could do - fly. The elders explain that for many people, this process takes many lifetimes. If you do well in a given life, you graduate to a "higher" life where you can then work with people on your next stage of progress. If you just get by in your current life, then you get reborn into that same level, to have another chance to strive.

Many people sometimes are like most of the gulls in this book, they need to learn the lessons that "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" gives: the most important thing is to believe in oneself, and always do one's best without giving up.

The Alchemist

The alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a tale a shepherd boy (Santiago), who dreams of seeing the world. Santiago travels from from Spain to Morocco in search of worldly success, and eventually to Egypt, where a fateful encounter with an alchemist brings him at last to self-understanding and spiritual enlightenment.

The book is compelling in its own right, but gains resonance through the many lessons Santiago learns during his adventures. The story has the comic charm, dramatic tension and psychological intensity of a fairy tale, but it's full of specific wisdom as well, about becoming self-empowered, overcoming depression, and believing in dreams. While the lack of character or plot complexity precludes this minimalist work from being considered a great novel, it will be a satisfying read for those seeking inspiration of the purest sort. A few other noted works by Paulo Coelho are

* Warrior of the light
* The Pilgrimage
* The Devil and Mass Prym
* Buddhist Pilgrimage
* Winner Stands Alone
